In 2003 Romuald Twardowski’s curiosity led him to compose these miniatures without an instrument; he relied exclusively on his experience and musical imagination. Twardowski was very satisfied with the results, yet never attempted such a creative experiment again. He did, however, stress that Three Sketches for a string trio is an important and unique element of his output. The miniatures were conceived as a series, as clearly indicated by their titles (Initio – Corale – Conclusione). This “moderately modern composer” (as Twardowski referred to himself) felt a constant need to converse with the past and reflected on his own artistic achievements as well. Corale refers to an idea from the final part of a neo archaic composition for an orchestra from 1966 – Tre studi secondo Giotto. He set (as per his words) “measurably rhythmic chorale themes” against a “vibrating aleatory layer”. Twardowski always exercises restraint when using avant garde techniques and means of expression, thus allowing the musical narrative to remain clear, logical, and incredibly captivating. The piece was recorded in 2006 by Warsaw Trio for Acte Préalable.
